Citronella Collar Dog TrainingCitronella collar dog training starts with purchasing and fitting a citronella collar to your dog. Directions for assembly and placement of the collar will be included with the collar - follow those instructions carefully to ensure proper placement of the collar, microphone and spray nozzle. After you have attached the collar according to the manufacturer's instructions, you can test the collar by putting your dog in a situation where he normally barks. For example, many dogs bark when someone comes to the door, so having someone knock on the door or ring the doorbell is a good way to get him to bark and test that the microphone is working. When your dog barks, he will be sprayed with a burst of citronella. This will probably surprise him and cause him to quiet a bit. If he jumps to move away from the spray, sneezes, or shakes his head, be sure not to yell or tell him "no". Once he settles down and stops barking, reward him for the quiet behavior by telling him "good quiet". Whenever your dog is NOT barking in situations where he normally would have barked, be sure to reward him with verbal praise ("good quiet") as well as a food/treat reward.
Continue practicing by putting your dog in situations where he may bark and you can reward good behavior. For example, take him outside with other animals, ring the doorbell, etc.. He may bark in these situations. If he does, don't make eye contact or say anything to him. When he STOPS barking, reward his quiet behavior with a "good quiet" and a treat. Eventually, he will associate the treats and "good quiet" with NOT barking. Continue teaming his quiet behavior with the verbal praise "good quiet", and he will come to stop barking with the simple verbal command "quiet".
