Citronella Dog Collars

Citronella dog collars are reported to be effective in stopping "nuisance barking" in dogs. Nuisance barking is when a dog barks for no apparent reason. Rather than barking to alert their owners, nuisance barkers may bark just beacause they hear another dog bark, for territorial reasons, or for attention.

A 1996 test conducted by the Animal Behavior Clinic at Cornell's College of Veterinary Medicine found that a squirt of citronella spray was more effective than shock collars in preventing nuisance barking. That may be because dogs have such developed senses of smell that they found the odor of the citronella to be less tolerable than a likely painful stimulus.

Many owners in the study who tried both the citronella collars and shock collars felt that the citronella collars were a more humane choice, although both types of collars can be effective in modifying the behavior of nuisance-barking dogs.
