Design Your Own Dog Collar

If you want to design your own dog collar, whether you make it yourself or have it made, following are some things to consider.

Does the collar need to be adjustable or would a fixed width collar work? Do you need a special collar like a martingale? How wide do you want the collar to be? Generally, the smaller the dog, the narrower the collar, but personal preference may dictate this.

For a truly functional collar, you may want a sturdy material like webbing or leather. If the collar is 'decoration only', then you can opt for luxurious fabrics, fancy ribbons, or gems and jewels. If you're crafty, you can embellish recycled materials like fabric scraps and old denim jeans and make great collars or collar covers. Collars can even be braided, knitted or crocheted from yarn.

Do you have a preference for plastic or metal buckles? What about d-rings for attaching ID tags or charms? Depending on the final design, specialty collars like the martingale may require chain and rings, or a slide for adjustability. Hardware can also come in a variety of colors allowing for true customization and matching to your material choice.

You can also purchase "design-your-own" collar kits which usually come with a pre-made collar. These kits may also include, embellishments, paints, ribbons, etc., for dressing up the basic collar the kit comes with.
