Dog Collar Supplies

If you're making collars, you'll need dog collar supplies. These may include:

Hardware:

Hardware such as buckles, snaps, d-rings or chain may be needed depending on the type of collar being made.

Material:

Collars can be fashioned from a variety of materials, depending on the sturdiness needed for the collar.

Here are some ideas:

  • Webbing - available in nylon, polypropylene, even cotton and hemp. Nylon webbing is thicker, softer and less irritating than polypropylene webbing, however, it can stretch if it gets wet. For dogs who swim, consider polypropylene webbing. Nylon or cotton may be better choices for dogs with sensitive skin.
  • Recycled denim
  • Ribbon
  • A piece of beatiful fabric
  • Yarn or hemp

Embellishments:

Even the most boring single-color webbing collar can be dressed up. Here are some ideas for adding that "something extra" to your new collar (or even dressing up an existing collar):

  • Stitch some coordinating decorative ribbon just slightly narrower than the collar right over the top.
  • Using a needle and thread, stitch on beads, buttons or studs with a dog theme, such as bones or paws.
  • Using a strong jeweler's adhesive, add flat-backed rhinestones or crystals.

Other Supplies:

Depending on your design, other items you may need for making your collar include: jeweler's adhesive, needle and thread, double-stick hemming tape or fabric glue, or collar patterns.

Most of the supplies you'll need for making your collar can be purchased at local sewing or hobby stores. There are usually so many things to choose from, it's hard to decide which ones to get!

These are just a few ideas on the supplies that can be used for collars. Get creative and experiment. Please use caution when deciding on the appropriateness of a particular material for your dog. Some of these ideas are just not suited for dogs that tug excessively or are known "chewers".
