Vibrating Dog Collars

Vibrating dog collars can be very effective in training deaf, hard of hearing dogs, or older dogs who may be losing their hearing. Basically, a vibrating collar has two components - the collar with attached vibrating unit for the dog, and a remote for the owner to use to signal the vibration.

If you are thinking about a vibrating collar for your dog, here are some considerations before you purchase:

  • Size - Look for the most compact unit available, for both the collar and the remote. A guideline is that the collar should weigh no more than 5% of the dog's body weight. Because of their weight, most vibrating collars will only fit medium to large sized dogs and would be too heavy for a smaller dog.
  • Transmission Range - The longer the range, the further your dog will be able to go and still have the collar operate reliably.
  • Waterproofing - Look for a unit that has both a waterproof collar unit and remote.
  • Battery Life - Usually, both components (collar unit and the hand-held remote) require batteries for operation. Longer battery life will reduce the number of batteries you will need to purchase and the frequency of replacement.
  • Vibration/Tone Option - This feature allows the vibration and tone to each be used separately, or together. The tone option will let you know that the collar worked when the vibration was signalled. It will also help you to locate your dog if he/she gets out of your sight without responding.
  • Of course, the more features, the more costly the collar may be. Look for the most features that are important for your situation relative to the cost of the collar and your budget.
